Assistant Rabbi Candidate – Rabbi Sandy Shulkes
YISE Welcomes Assistant Rabbi Candidate:
Rabbi Sandor (“Sandy”) Shulkes
Rabbi Sandy Shulkes, originally from Hollywood Florida, comes to YISE from Dallas, Texas where he serves as a Rabbinic Fellow at Congregation Shaare Tefilla. Before heading to Dallas, he served as a rabbinic intern in three New York area synagogues – Congregation Ramath Orah, Young Israel of Jamaica Estates and the Young Israel of Stamford.
Rabbi Shulkes wears many hats in Dallas; in addition to his rabbinic responsibilities at Shaare Tefilla, he teaches Judaic subjects in the local community Jewish middle and high schools and is the chapter director and rabbinic coordinator for the Dallas Yachad. In his current rabbinic capacity, Rabbi Shulkes has many responsibilities in the shul including delivering drashos and classes, youth and adult programming, hosting members for Shabbos meals and visiting the sick or elderly.
Rabbi Shulkes received Semicha at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University and a Masters Degree in Jewish Philosophy from the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Yeshiva University. Rabbi Shulkes also spent a significant time studying at both the Yeshiva of Greater Washington and Ner Israel while simultaneously pursuing an Accounting degree at University of Maryland University College.
Rabbi Shulkes and his wife, Rachel, have a 22 month old daughter Sarah and are expecting another child in July. Unfortunately, Rachel will not be joining Rabbi Shulkes when he visits YISE this Shabbos as she is on bed rest for the duration of her pregnancy and is unable to travel.

The congregation has many opportunities to hear Rabbi Shulkes speak and to interact with Rabbi Shulkes. Rabbi Shulkes will Daven at the 8:00 Minyan on Shabbos morning, where he will give a Dvar Torah. He will attend the 8:00 Minyan's Kiddush. He will also give a Dvar Torah at the 8:45 Minyan (no earlier than 10:45), after which he will attend the 8:45 Minyan’s Kiddush. Rabbi Shulkes will meet with the Assistant Rabbi Search Committee on Shabbos afternoon so he can ask any additional questions he has about the community. He will teach a shiur between Mincha and Maariv on Shabbos afternoon. On Sunday morning Rabbi Shulkes will attend a Meet and Greet event in the Social Hall from 9:30 to 10:00. This will be followed by a question and answer session with the congregation from 10:00 to 11:00. Questions may be submitted in advance by email to ARSC@yise.org (until midnight on motzai Shabbos) or in writing at the event. We ask that questions be submitted in writing so we can ensure a range of questions for each candidate. We hope that each member of the congregation is able to make time to attend at least one of the events at which Rabbi Shulkes will be available.
Please extend a warm welcome to Rabbi Shulkes.
