Renovation/Rededication Update

YISE has engaged AP Construction Services to manage our renovation project.

On Wednesday, 4/17/12, we met for a pre-bid conference with several firms interested in bidding on the project and with experience in the type of work we need. Bids for the exterior renovation work (as shown in the rendering on display in the lobby outside the Belonofsky Sanctuary) are due by April 27th. Our hope is to be able to start the work by June 1st and complete everything by Labor Day.

We have also had the manufacturers of our dividers (in the Social Hall) out to give us an estimate on repairs and recovering the dividers (which will also help with soundproofing we were told). Other renovation projects have been reviewed and are awaiting review of the bids for the major exterior project to see what more we can afford.

Speaking of afford-We have 152 donors to the Renovation Fund-which is kept in a totally separate account from general Shul funds. Baruch Hashem for the generosity of our donors. However many of our members have not yet made their donations and we could use additional funds and maximum participation. We are not making individual phone calls at this time so consider this a personal solicitation. Ideally we would like everyone to contribute something so that we all have a part in this project.

We will be making much needed repairs (there is water and other damage in the old siding), and will also beautify the Shul and rename the building in memory of Rabbi Gedaliah Anemer, zt"l. Donations can be made in one lump sum or in two or three payments, and can be made in honor or memory of someone. Donations of $613 or more will be acknowledged in a plaque to be placed in the lower lobby. For those who made pledges and can make a further payment on the pledge, it would be appreciated so we can move forward with all aspects of the renovation project. If you have any questions, please contact Howie Schulman at hschulman@yise.org . Heartfelt thanks to each and every donor.

Howard Schulman, Renovation Chairman

From the Nursery Director

I had the privilege to attend a study program in Italy before Pesach this year. I toured a cluster of preschools situated in a small town called Reggio Emilia. These preschools have been recognized by Time Magazine as the "gold standard" of preschools, worldwide. They were developed after World War II when the town had been devastated and needed rebuilding. The community agreed that in order to create a world of peaceful collaborators, one without war and violence, children need to learn, from the beginning, how to grow within a community. Every aspect of school is therefore communal. Teachers work as a group to develop all curriculum and parents and community members contribute in many ways to encourage collaboration on a city wide level.

An example of this was evident in the children's art work displayed all over the town; along the metro station, in shop windows, on huge bulletin boards. In addition, the town created a recycling center for the preschools so that their imagination and creativity was supported by not only individuals who volunteered at the center, but on a municipal level. Inside the classrooms children are grouped together to support each other's learning. Students from ages 2 years and up are taught to give constructive insights about each other's work. This allows children to learn through social constructivism – an important skill when participating as a member of a cohesive community.

All of this reflects our goals as a Jewish community preschool. The staff at YISE Nursery is dedicated to our children who are a reflection of the community in which we live. We strive to support the growth and learning of every individual child, and recognize that this is best done within an environment that is positive, creative, respectful and inspiring, and most importantly as an essential member of the community. As the director of Young Israel Shomrai Emunah Nursery, I am awed by the commitment of parents who work hard to provide a costly education for their children. I am also awed by community members who give us their support; whether in the form of extra funding, a donation of time, sound advice, willingness to compromise, or just understanding and supporting our mission.

Thank you for your continued support and interest in our preschool.

Lianne Heller, Nursery Director
