Message from Rabbi Rosenbaum: Shabbos Elevators

A number of individuals have asked about the Halachic implications of the "Shabbos elevator" recently installed at the University Towers. There are different opinions on this topic. I would encourage people to whom taking the stairs creates a significant difficulty to use the "Shabbos elevator." I would also advise that one only enter the elevator immediately upon the opening of the doors (in other words, if a person happens to come to the elevator area and finds an open elevator waiting I would encourage waiting for the next arrival). Individuals should feel free to discuss the matter further with myself or Rabbi Silver.
